Cast your mind back to 2010, if you can. The shock of the 2008 crash was genuine: many people were reeling in the wake of redundancy, and small businesses struggled. Yet the better times weren’t so far behind us. Many still found mortgages easy to obtain, and their repayments were at a historic low thanks to rock-bottom interest rates. The prospect of leaving the European Union was still a fringe obsession.
