Why Skilled Trades Are in High Demand, Despite Weak Jobs Report
Despite — or because of — AI’s rise, it’s a great time to become a plumber, electrician, or HVAC engineer.

The August jobs report was so weak that it triggered worries of a slowing economy, prompting almost every Wall Street firm to expect multiple rate cuts this year. The markets may be nervous, but data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that something very different is playing out for some skilled trades. The Bureau’s “Occupational Outlook Handbook” examines 600 different occupations, and it says that demand for HVAC workers, electricians and plumbers is predicted to grow at a rate far above the average for other professions, HRDive reports.
In particular, electrical workers really are expected to be in demand. The BLS data say that employment for those skilled tradespeople is predicted to grow 9 percent from 2024’s employment figures until 2034, adding some 81,000 positions each year on average — a rough total of 810,000 new jobs over the 10-year period.
