Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates penned a blog post last week about a new type of power plant that is poised to generate electricity from hot rocks underground. 

The plant in question is Fervo Energy’s planned facility at Cape Station, Utah—and the technology is geothermal.

“Geothermal is one of the most promising ways to deliver clean energy that’s reliable and affordable,” Gates wrote in his blog, Gates Notes. “Intermittent power sources like wind and solar will play a key role, but we also need sources of energy that work around the clock without contributing to climate change, like geothermal and nuclear power.”
