Keir Starmer has been urged to “show some backbone” to Donald Trump amid his recent military action against Venezuela and his threats towards Greenland.

The prime minister has refused to criticise the US president after American troops seized Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and announced the White House would “run” the country until a safe transition of power.

But he did join with his European allies in writing a joint statement reminding Trump that the future of Greenland, a Danish territory, can only be decided by Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark on Tuesday.

Hours later, the White House reiterated its ambitions to “acquire” the US – and possibly deploying US military if necessary – ignoring Europe.

So on Wednesday, Green Party MP Carla Denyer slammed the prime minister for not doing more to protect Greenland.

She said: “Buoyed up by his imperialistic adventures in Venezuela, where he trampled over international law, Trump is now eyeing up Greenland.
