Vladimir Putin is trying to cause a “humanitarian crisis” in Ukraine over the winter by bombarding its key national infrastructure, according to UK officials.

Russia launched major air strikes on Ukraine overnight shortly after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had “constructive” talks with Donald Trump’s negotiators about the US push to end the war.

According to the UK’s Ministry of Defence, Moscow is trying to cause a major crisis in Ukraine.

In its latest update posted online, the MoD said: “Russia is continuing its concerted deep strike campaign against Ukrainian energy critical national infrastructure (CNI) almost certainly seeking to cause a humanitarian crisis amongst Ukraine’s civilian population over winter.”
