Keir Starmer is now facing pressure from across the political spectrum to take further action to stop Israel’s war on Gaza as starvation in the Palestinian territory soars.
For more than 21 months, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has been waging a ruthless assault on Gaza, triggered by the Hamas militants’ brutal attack on Israelis back on October 7, 2023.
The war has split public opinion in the UK, with pro-Gaza protests springing up around the country as the government insists Israel has the right to defend itself.
However, Israel’s blockade of aid and its recent attacks on any Palestinians trying to reach the slight trickle of relief allowed into Gaza seems to have become an intolerable turning point for many.
Crossings into Gaza have been closed since March 2, meaning no fresh supplies have ben allowed to enter despite the crisis – plunging much of the 2.1 million population into poverty.
The UN reports that, as of July 13, 875 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food. A further 201 were killed on aid routes and even more were killed at distribution points.
Save The Children has warned that massacres are occurring at food distribution sites in Gaza every day.
The charity also pointed out: “The starvation of civilians as a method of warfare is a war crime.”
