Many of us are aware of the links between UV rays and skin cancer – Cancer Research UK says that 90% of melanoma cases “could be prevented by staying safe in the sun and avoiding sunbeds”.

Having five or more bad sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 is linked to an 80% increase in melanoma risk, too.

But according to audiologist Hannah Samuels from Boots Hearingcare, scorched skin could have a surprising effect on your hearing too.

“Sunburn is one of the things that doesn’t just feel painful and uncomfortable, but it can also have a big impact on our ear health,” she said.
