Truboy BBQ Market, a new smoked-meat emporium and specialty food store in Missouri City, is the first barbecue joint I’ve visited that sells golf balls.

They sit among a dizzying array of branded merchandise – T-shirts, coffee mugs, aprons, tote bags – as well as an impressive lineup of food items: packaged snacks, jars of beef tallow, and an entire freezer wall stocked with fully cooked brisket, beef ribs, turkey, and sausage. Yet those golf balls tell you something important about this place and the story behind it.

“People always say do what you love and I love playing golf and I love smoking meats,” owner Jereis Khawaja says with a laugh,........
