Democracy thrives or dies on how we draw political districts, and the prognosis for Texas is not good.
Gov. Greg Abbott convened the Texas Legislature at noon on Monday to ensure minorities and liberals have as little voice in Congress as possible. He has ordered GOP lawmakers to effectively rig the 2026 congressional election to favor President Donald Trump.
Taking away more than 40% of the population’s ability to elect a candidate and establish an unbeatable single-party regime is, by definition, totalitarianism.

“This is not normal shenanigans. This is not a normal power play,” state Rep. Gene Wu, the Democratic leader in the Texas House, said at a news conference Monday. “This is a president of the United States who does not care about what the law is, does not give a crap what's in the Constitution and a political leadership that is unwilling to say, ‘No.’”
States typically redraw political maps once a decade after the U.S. census to guarantee everyone’s vote counts by having an equal number of people in each district. Well-drawn........
