Biden's immigration order won't solve a problem Congress must fix

Biden unveiled plans to enact immediate significant restrictions on migrants seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border as the White House tries to neutralize immigration as a political liability ahead of the November elections.

President Joe Biden finally acknowledged that Americans are frustrated with our broken immigration system, and his weak effort proves that only a comprehensive, bipartisan law can address the crisis.

Migrant rights activists decried Biden’s executive order on Tuesday that stopped recognizing asylum claims unless they are made at an official port of entry. The order harkens back to former President Donald Trump’s “remain in Mexico” policy.

Progressives promised litigation since a federal judge declared Trump’s similar orders unconstitutional. Biden’s new policy was too little, too late for Republicans committed to winning the 2024 presidential election on outrage over immigration.
