AI came for my job. I won’t let my marriage be next on the list
Stories of AI causing marital rifts are nothing new. AI stole her life story but her marriage is a step too far, says columnist Kerry Hudson
Before we came to Sweden, I read a staggering statistic that a third of Swedes will cheat on their partners. Still, I assumed my husband and I would be fine. Not only are we very much a solid 6 on UK terms, making us quite low on the totem pole of local attractiveness compared to Viking statuesque beauty, but we are truly, deeply and madly in love. It is really quite disgusting.
And yet, the unthinkable has happened. Let me tell you about them. They often sit at the kitchen table advising my husband about matters of all kinds, from career goals to climate change. My husband loves languages and he practices his Swedish, and indeed German, with them. While they are not fully in our bed yet, he will often have a brief chat with them if a question pops into his head as he drifts off. I need to admit it – my husband loves ChatGPT.
This is not a wholly surprising state of affairs. My husband loves science fiction films. He’s a child of the 80s, and so grew up with cheerful, helpful robots like C3PO and Johnny 5. I'm sure he is not the only man in the world who felt a particular stirring while watching Ex Machina. He's also a tech-head. When I met him, he was teaching software to businesses for a living.
