Donald Trump is about to become President of the United States. Again. He is unfit for high office. More than just unpleasant to women, he is a serial liar, a bully and threat to democracy. Yet almost 80 million people voted for him.
Couldn’t happen here we think. We kid ourselves.
The economic and political conditions in Europe now are worryingly similar to those in the 1930s. Stagnant wages, insecurity, Governments unable to deliver, war. Voters, not just in America, reach for the strong men and women who will Get Stuff Done.
The far right is often cited as the threat and compared in hushed tones to the most evil of them all, the Nazis.
“Nazi” is shorthand for National Socialist German Workers Party. Doesn’t sound very right wing does it? Politics is rather horseshoe shaped, sensible in the middle but daft at the extremes and those extremes are remarkably like each other. Somebody else is to blame, there is enough to go around so vote for me and I will get it for you, it’s not complicated it’s simple and I know what to do. Beguiling.
