Scotland's housebuilders face 'biggest challenges in a generation'
Scotland's housebuilders are facing the biggest challenges of a generation, but is there a way through? Here, Jonathan Guthrie sets out one route to help end Scotland's housing crisis.
One of Scotland’s greatest strengths has always been our ability to invent our way out of problems and into the history books.
From engineering and medicine to finance and design, this country has a proud record of turning constraint into creativity. In the world of real estate investment and development, we need to draw on that same spirit of invention to face some of the biggest challenges in a generation.
We’re 18 months into a national housing emergency and housing completions continue to fall; development costs are rising, in part because activity is falling; and our towns and cities are under pressure to adapt to new ways of living and working.
But where there are challenges there are opportunities. There is a chance to do things differently. Over the past year, we’ve started to see a shift in how government and industry work together. That’s important, because the scale of the challenge means neither can succeed without the other.
Our manifesto, Building a Better Scotland, sets out three clear priorities: understanding development........
