A reset is needed in the way Scotland values different educational pathways, and pupils need more options at an earlier age, writes Edinburgh College Principal and CEO Audrey Cumberford.

For too many years we’ve ingrained in our young people that to be successful you need to study at a university, that to develop a skill you need to spend years of your life studying and that if you did this it would inevitably lead to a career that you would develop for the rest of your life. Not getting a place at university could be seen as a failure and put you at risk of not achieving your full potential.

Alan Millburn’s recent review laid bare the issues that this approach has caused. Too many young people are being pushed into university rather than taking up vocational or technical training, and as a result, 10.6% of our young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEETs) have university degrees.
