Scotland is no longer a global leader on climate change
One-year anniversaries are typically joyous moments to savour and celebrate. But this past week there‘s been an occasion that marks a much less fortunate moment in our shared history.
This time last year, the Scottish Government announced that it was no longer on course to meet its 2030 climate targets and would be removing the legal obligation to do so. This left our mantle as ‘a global leader on climate change’ severely tarnished.
The admission that the climate targets weren’t going to be achieved should have been a major wake up call for the government. At the time, the Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero announced a ‘policy package’ of measures to get us back on track and reinvigorate the drive to net zero climate emissions.
Today, this document makes for grim reading: it’s largely a series of watered-down policies, delays and U-turns, which draws into question whether climate action remains a priority for this government.
