Early favourite responds to Celtic managerial links

Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou has addressed speculation linking him with a move to Celtic.

Askou, who is the early favourite to succeed Martin O'Neill this summer, has impressed in his debut season with the North Lanarkshire club.

The team has secured a top-six finish for the first time since 2021, placing mere points behind Celtic.

Motherwell's performance has fuelled discussions about potential title contention. In response to questions about moving to Celtic, Askou said: "I don’t know if it’s disrespectful, but I don’t think it [speculation] is anything you can avoid.

"It’s not something I need to comment on or anything; it’s something that we cannot stop.

"There is a little bit of noise and speculation about stuff, but the good thing is that I’m here, I’m really pleased with that."

Commenting on the situation, he mentioned: "Celtic, they have a job to do as well, and that’s why I don’t feel any need to comment on these things.

"Everyone needs their peace and quiet to finish the season strongly.

"It’s an environment that we’ve pushed from day one, that we don’t want to get too obsessed or excited or affected by what happens around us.

"We focus on what we can control."

As things stand, Askou’s Motherwell are just four points behind Celtic in the league standings. The two sides are due to meet at Celtic Park next month.

Following the league split, they are also expected to clash at Fir Park, with many still including the Steelmen in potential title talk regarding the league title.
