The power of art in the well-being of youth

Have you ever had conversations that haunt you? In pursuit of finding a topic for Some Assembly’s new theatre project, I had conversations with several young people in February 2024 to find out what life concerns they had and what issues were important to them. Some shared concern of the growing trend of apathy among youth and that “it's not cool to care,” especially about important life issues including climate change. Some said, “what’s the point in caring when it appears that many adults in positions of power don’t care?” Others spoke about how this issue triggers extreme anxiety and a sense of pointlessness that there may be no tomorrow. These conversations haunted me. I knew I had to do something about it. So, a creative team of youth writers, actors, musicians, designers and professional artists was assembled, and these conversations became the inspiration for Our Last Tree.
