Gold traditionally functions as a safe haven during geopolitical conflict, but the war in Iran has flipped that expectation on its head.

Since the conflict began in late February, gold has fallen 11%, but that’s not necessarily a sign of failure—it’s still a commodity, at the end of the day. During times of stress, gold is a helpful stand-in for dollars, according to Kristian Kerr, LPL’s head of macro strategy. Several Persian Gulf states are experiencing pressure as fewer oil sales has translated to fewer dollars pouring into the region.

The dip doesn’t mean investors are losing faith, but it does suggest that some of the world’s largest holders need cash more than protection.
