Most people don't think twice about how they dry their hair. You shower, grab a towel, and rub your head dry; it takes about thirty seconds and feels completely harmless. But if you've been noticing more hair on your towel lately, or increased breakage, this small habit might be worth a second look.

Why Hair Is Especially Vulnerable When Wet

Hair doesn't behave the same way when wet as it does when dry. When your hair absorbs water, the outer layer, called the cuticle, swells and lifts slightly. This makes the hair shaft softer, more elastic, and significantly more fragile than its usual state.

Think of it like wet paper versus dry paper. Dry paper tears cleanly. Wet paper stretches, bends, and tears unevenly. Wet hair responds in a similar way. Any friction or tension applied at this point is more likely to cause real damage, not just surface dryness, but actual breakage at the strand level.

This is why the drying phase matters far more than most people realize.
