GUEST APPEARANCE: The Ides
A metaphor of political foreboding — “Et tu, Brutus,” gasped Caesar, we all know — the Ides of March fell upon us this year with the most calamitous opening months of any recent president.
At every turn Trump has been challenged by the courts. As of March 15, there had been 126 cases, an unprecedented amount in such a brief period, lodged against this administration, including those regarding birthright citizenship, revocation of temporary protected status, IRS data sharing, dismantling of federal agencies such as USAID and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and challenging the disclosure of personal information.
The Trump administration does not care if injunctions remain in place, or if they potentially may lose these cases; instead, the administration hopes to break the judicial system by bogging it down, and by defying it. Trump’s intent is clear: We are disposable; the law provides no safe harbor.
