William Watson: Economically, COVID was a one-shock stop
A new study suggests a slightly modified standard model explains the COVID crash and recovery. Maybe the pandemic didn't change everything

In a piece in this week’s Spectator magazine lamenting “How COVID broke Britain,” the inimitably frank Rod Liddle notes how, “The U.K. is by far and away the country in Europe most smitten by the working-from-home virus: an average of 1.8 working days a week are spent at home here, compared with 1.3 around the world.” And he continues: “Only the reliably stupid Canadians exceed our figure.” When Prime Minister Mark Carney says we Canadians are more like Europeans than Americans he presumably intends that as praise. Many people won’t see it that way.
