Column: A to-do list for the ledge
Yes, it's almost "hold your breath time" again as the Ledge prepares some 1,200-plus bills to drop in the hopper for next year's legislative session. However, in that raft of mostly worthless bills, there are some that deserve to be passed. These bills would improve our quality of life and make us more civilized. Of course, that is the underlying reason for a legislative bill. It should improve our quality of life.
I know that, out of the 1,200-plus bills that will hit the floor in January, there are some that would do just that, but a lot of these bills should have RIP stamped on them. And 1,200 bills? The sources I checked said 1,200 to 1,500 bills can be expected to be filed in a legislative session.
Just think. If all these bills filed were considered by committees and multiple copies made, along with all the side crap they authorized, you would need a dump truck just to haul them off to a landfill. Of course, most of them are just window dressing, and the good old boys and girls serving in the Ledge would be shocked if even 20% became law. But how much window dressing can we afford?
I don't have the space to point out all the stupid legislative miscues that are taking up most of the time in the Ledge, such as regulating who uses restrooms.
