Opinion: How to lessen wait times in Alberta's overcrowded ERs It is so sad to hear of possibly preventable deaths in our Edmonton hospital emergency rooms (ERs). I appreciate the Alberta Medical Association, United Nurses of Alberta, and other groups and individuals who have asked for government attention and action, as this is not a new issue, nor is the exceptionally long wait for care in most ERs across Alberta every hour and day of the week.

As I write this, if anyone went to an Edmonton hospital, according to the online “estimated emergency department wait times,” they would likely wait 5-7 hours for care. When I needed a fingernail removed recently after it was half torn off, I was told in a city ER that I would likely wait 8-12 hours.
