Alberta Premier Danielle Smith hopes key energy projects will make it onto the updated federal list of nation-building projects to be fast-tracked for approval by the time the Grey Cup kicks off in Winnipeg.
In fact, Smith says her government is working to reach an understanding with the Carney government to make progress on key energy issues — including a new oil pipeline proposal — and would like to see an agreement in place by the time the CFL championship game starts on Nov. 16.
“We’re working up a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the prime minister on a number of fronts, because we talk about a grand bargain, and it’s a three-part bargain,” Smith said Tuesday, speaking from the United Arab Emirates at the end of a trade mission.

“We’ve got to address the bad laws that are impairing investment. We need a new bitumen pipeline to reach Asian markets. And we want to make sure that we’re still a leader in carbon emissions reduction through the Pathways (Alliance carbon capture) project,” she said in an interview.
“What we’re working on with the federal government is a comprehensive MOU, and we’re all targeting that same time frame — to have something announced before Grey Cup. And I hope we do.”
