And the winner is… The Debenham Lion, Suffolk

A 15th century pub that has served the village of Debenham since 1462, The Debenham Lion had been closed for 25 years and converted into a home before being brought back to life in 2023.

The owners undertook a meticulous restoration project to make it fit for purpose as a 21st century pub while retaining its original charm.

Since reopening, the Lion has established itself at the heart of Debenham’s thriving community. Every guest is warmly welcomed, whether they are popping in for a pint or for a full meal.

The judges said the enthusiasm and level of investment is clearly shown in the pub’s exterior and interior, which they described as “clean and cosy, nicely decorated but not fussy or pretentious”.

They liked that the menu puts a strong focus on local produce, with ingredients sourced within a 25-mile radius wherever possible.
