Town mayor demands action after shoplifting hits highest level in five years
It has been revealed that the number of recorded shoplifting offences in Beccles has hit the highest its been in the last five years.
So far this year, there have been 97 incidents compared to 78 during the whole of 2024, while in 2022 there were only 30.
And now Barry Darch, the mayor of Beccles, said he will be discussing the problem with the police.
Mr Darch said: "The latest figures on shoplifting in Beccles received this week which show a rising trend are very concerning.
"Life is difficult enough for our shops without the added costs of shoplifting.
"I shall be contacting the police to discuss the problem."
