Relic of town's riverside heyday to be demolished

The property, on Puddingmoor in Beccles, has been described as a "fascinating survivor" of the town's once bustling riverside area.

The Broads Society, the Beccles Society and Beccles Town Council had all objected to the demolition bid, along with concerned neighbours.

However, the Broads Authority approved the proposal to knock down the building, Wherry Cottage.

The bid, submitted by A.T Bent Properties earlier this year, included the redevelopment of the site into three three-bedroom homes.

The Beccles Society had tried to stop the loss of Wherry Cottage.

In a statement to the Broads Authority, it said: "It is a fascinating survivor which harks back to the earlier uses of the buildings along the river.

"We feel that its loss would start to erode part of the former industrial character of this part of the river frontage."
