Nearly 400 sewage dumps in Broads river leads to council's call for action
Data from a website titled ‘Top of the Poops’ has revealed that sewage was dumped into the River Waveney 391 times in 2024, lasting 2,297 hours.
It shows there were 32 discharges in Beccles and 58 in Bungay.
And now Beccles Town Council is discussing the possibility of organising “citizen water quality testing” in partnership with the River Waveney Trust.
Nathalie Chidley, a Beccles Town councillor who put the proposal forward, said: “The number is concerning as we have a large number of people that use the river recreationally.
“We have a duty to keep an eye on the river’s health and get evidence to hold the water companies to account.”
