Hero who saved village being blown to bits is remebered
Violet M. Hewitt risked her life and is said to have saved the village of Earsham from devastation after she prevented a train from colliding with bombs that had fallen onto a rail line.
The incident near Bungay happened on July 6, 1945, when a convoy of US army lorries was transporting "cluster" bombs in wooden cases in the village, which was home to ammunition depot Station 545.
But as the lorries were crossing the Drake's Lane Crossing, some cases fell on the Waveney Valley railway track.
