Controversial bid for major chicken farm set to be thrown out in six-year saga
The fate of a proposal to build three poultry units to house 100,335 broiler chickens by the A145 in Shadingfield, near Beccles, is to be decided by East Suffolk Council next week.
The bid, which was put forward by Merrells Growers in 2019, has received significant backlash from people living nearby, with 1,701 objections submitted online.
One neighbour feared that the village would be "plagued with flies and chicken detritus" if the plans were approved.
But ahead of the planning committee meeting next Tuesday, the proposal has been recommended for refusal.

The proposal is for three large units, feed bins, and an admin block on land off Mill Lane, with the facility serving the Crown Chicken processing plant at Eye.
Originally it was submitted by Merrell Growers in 2019 for 141,000 chickens. It saw 97 objections lodged raising concerns about the smell and traffic.
When it came in front of the planning committee in September 2020, Lee Osmon described it as a "monstrous chicken factory".
