Bid to 'beautify' historic town market square in £50,000 project
The Beccles Society has announced it will be launching a project to regenerate the Old Market to turn it back into a community hub.
It was originally the central market square of Beccles and was a fish market in the Anglo-Saxon period.
The area was said to be a "vibrant heart of the town" where locals would have come to shop, socialise and catch up on local events.
In 19th century it became a venue for travelling theatres and menageries and in 1868, there was even said to be a parade of elephants and camels in the Old Market.
However, the society believes that while several of the old buildings still exist today, it has a "different, more utilitarian feel to it than a meeting place for townsfolk and visitors".
