'Large and complex' blaze rips through barns at farm

Firefighters were called to Cherry Tree Farm in Metfield at around 1.45am this morning after neighbours described hearing sounds "like fireworks".

The flames spread to several large barns on the site, affecting an area of about 150 metres by 40 metres and seeing at least one building partially collapse.

Fire crews from Suffolk continue to fight the blaze near Harleston more than 12 hours later.

As of 4.30pm, four fire engines and a water carrier remained at the scene.

A spokesman for the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "The crews have made good progress in containing and surrounding the fire but extinguishing it remains problematic due to unstable building structures and the risk of collapse, as well as the presence of asbestos.

"One of the main concerns is the 150 acres of crop that are located just behind the barns which are due to be harvested in a week’s time.

"A fire break has been put in place to prevent the fire from spreading to the crop, but the fire service will need to maintain a presence on site for two to three days to monitor the........
