The hearing was told Abbott would buy clothes for the girl - who was 11 when the abuse started - but told her he should get "something in return".

The victim - who was not a pupil at George White Junior - was told by Abbott the abuse was "normal" and that "lots of people did it".

She was not attending school at the time and later told police her friends had "ditched her".

Lynne Shirley, prosecuting, said this meant she "thought it was normal" and a "little phase that would stop soon".
