The neighbour dispute which encapsulates the north Norfolk divide

But the gulf between the owners of 11 and 12 Walkers Close, in Burnham Market, could not be further apart.

On the one side are Ivy and David Wells, a couple who have called the village their home since they were born there more than 90 years ago.

On the other side of their slim party wall is Naomi Clark, a high-flying City investor who wants to demolish and rebuild her semi-detached property to make the latest holiday home in what has become one of the UK's most exclusive enclaves.

Her plans have sparked a dispute between her and her neighbours which perfectly highlights the tensions between the two sides of north Norfolk: the locals who have lived there for generations and wealthy incomers who bring investment but also sometimes resentment.

The property in question was built in 1937 as council housing. The Wells have lived in their half for 60 years.

Ms Clark, a senior pension fund manager from London, brought the adjoining property earlier this year.

She wants to demolish the two-bed house and replace it with a substantially larger four-bed holiday home, which she can rent out.

Mr Wells, 92, and Mrs Wells, 87, first learned of scheme last month, when Ms Clark lodged her plans with West Norfolk Council.
