Councillors have approved the scheme in Ormesby amid a tense atmosphere at Great Yarmouth's town hall on Wednesday night which saw dozens of people voicing their concerns.

Signs were held up by protestors as the planning committee at Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC) debated the proposal by Flagship - one of the biggest housing developers in the county - to construct the homes on farmland at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac off Barton Way.

Officers had recommended for the scheme to be approved prior to the meeting, highlighting that it will deliver much-needed homes for the village. Nearly 50pc would be offered as affordable rentals.

But locals have numerous concerns that range from danger increased traffic could bring, a lack of job opportunities in the area and harm it could cause to wildlife. This led more than 400 people to write letters of objection to GYBC.
