Councillors make moves to restrict protests at asylum hotel - including banning flags

Green members of Norwich City Council are calling for a public space protection order to be introduced to prevent certain demonstrations around the Brook Hotel, in Bowthorpe.

The venue has been the focus of widespread protests since the summer, although they have declined in intensity in recent weeks.

Ian Stutely, a Green councillor, wants to bring in measures which would forbid people from gathering in the area after dark, filming those entering and leaving, erecting flags or signs on lampposts in the vicinity of the hotel or from attempting to enter its grounds without permission.

Anyone found breaching the rules could face a fine. He does not propose banning protests during the day, although wants a total ban on flags.

However, his proposals are being resisted by the Labour-run authority, which said a ban would breach people's human rights and that police have sufficient powers to deal with any criminality.
