Fears raised over increased seasonal charges on seafront car parks
East Suffolk Council is introducing new seasonal tariffs in a limited number of coastal car parks in Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Southwold.
Running from April 1 to October 31 in certain council-owned car parks, the new seasonal tariff is higher priced than off-season as the council aims to ease the demand on busy car parks during the main tourism season.
However, businesses in Lowestoft said the increased seasonal charges run the risk of driving visitors away during the peak period.
A petition has been launched, and Ben Llewellyn, director of Claremont Pier, said the seasonal parking charges will "kill off businesses" on Lowestoft seafront.
The new seasonal tariff will operate in five council-owned car parks near to the beach in Lowestoft - at Pakefield Road, Pakefield Street, Claremont Pier, Kirkley Cliff and Royal Green.
In these car parks a two-hour stay will rise from £1.50 to £4, a four-hour stay will be doubled from £3 to £6, and an all-day stay will increase from £4 to £8.
The off-season tariff prices - between November 1 and the end of March - in these seasonal locations will be £2 for a two hour stay, £3.50 for a four-hour stay and £5 for a 10-hour stay.
