Pub forced to close due to staff row and rising costs

The Queens Head in Wymondham has gone into administration as tensions between owners and kitchen staff proved too difficult to manage and renovation costs spiralled.

The pub is owned and run by husband and wife team Nick and Victoria Anderson, who said they have had to close the business as it became unsustainable.

Mrs Anderson said: "It was a perfect storm of problems. Issues with kitchen staff, rising renovation costs and people buying less.

"We had to do emergency repairs to the pub to keep it safe and we found more problems.

"We also lost our cellar cooling system and then our central heating and costs were escalating.

"Everything was positive at Christmas, but I noticed a change in people's buying habits, people were spending less.

"We tried to move forward by simplifying the menu, while keeping the flair.

"The kitchen agreed initially, then they refused and the relationship started to break down.

"We have had to close and go into administration but have paid all our staff."

Plans to refurbish the Queens Head in Bridewell Street, Wymondham, were given the green light by Broadland District Council last year.

The rendered Georgian-style front of the pub is in a poor state and multiple coats of paint have been added over the years, exacerbating the problem.

Works to refurbish the pub began earlier this year, but when the render was taken off the old building, problems with the roof and windows were discovered which have pushed up repair costs.

Mrs Anderson has run the venue since 2017 transforming the venue from a restaurant to a gastropub.
