Housing company apologises after people locked out for almost three days

The main door of Helgate Court, on Westwick Street in Norwich, broke on Wednesday afternoon (April 1) and remained unfixed until today (April 4).

People were unable to get into the building, owned by Orbit, through the main door at the front.

A side door leading onto an alleyway was left permanently open, leaving the people living there feeling unsafe.

Orbit, the housing group, initially said the issue would be resolved in four hours, but still had not sent out engineers on Friday evening.

"How can they lock us out of our own flat?" said Pauline Taylor, 85, who lives on the top floor.

"There are people here in 31 different flats who are very frustrated."

A spokesman for Orbit said: "We apologise for the inconvenience customers experienced with accessing one of the doors to Helgate Court.

"Our contractor partner has completed the necessary repairs, and the door is fully operational again.

"We would like to thank our customers for their patience and we encourage them to contact us directly if they have any further concerns."
