Austen Moore, a self-employed life coach, urged West Norfolk Council to abandon the climate emergency it declared in 2021 and replace it with a "resilience strategy" focused on flooding, drainage and protecting farmland.

But councillors rejected the motion by 33 votes to seven, with two abstaining.

The motion had originally been due to be heard the previous Thursday, only to be postponed after a rare red heat alert left King's Lynn Town Hall, which has no air conditioning, too hot to sit in. 

Many were quick to point out the irony of the delay - and the temperature rose again when the motion finally reached the floor in an hour-long debate on Thursday night.
