North Norfolk District Council's Liberal Democrat cabinet voted unanimously to commit £2.4m to refurbish Cromer's Pavilion Theatre.

The money, which will be borrowed if no grant funding can be secured, will pay for new insulation, a modern heating and cooling system, refurbished seating and upgraded audio and lighting equipment.

The pier, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, has seen significant investment in recent years, including improvements to its structure and backstage facilities over the winter.

However the auditorium - which was originally built as an open air bandstand in 1901 before being enclosed in 1905 - has remained largely untouched of late.

In summer, audiences have sweltered, while winter performances have left patrons reaching for their coats.
