But the crew of Hemsby Lifeboat have had to issue their own mayday call... to deal with an anonymous Facebook page making scurrilous allegations about them.

The group instructed a lawyer to force the Hemsby Eyes account to remove a string of posts making unsubstantiated claims about its members.

The Facebook page has been at the centre of gossip in the village for several weeks, publishing a string of outrageous allegations about a number of local institutions, including the lifeboat.

It claimed the charity had been selling stolen goods and accused members of various crimes and sexual misbehaviour, all without evidence and strongly denied by the organisation.
