Emergency services called to beach after suspected explosive found

An unidentified object was spotted yesterday (Saturday, February 28) on Overstrand beach.

Police, the Coastguard and the 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal & Search Regiment from the Royal Logistic Corps in Colchester were all called to the scene.

But the object that was found was not an unexploded bomb.

It is not yet confirmed what the object was, though some Overstrand locals have said it may have been a shock absorber.

Locals have suggested the item, which was not explosive, might have been a mangle roller. (Image: North Norfolk District Council)

Others have suggested that it could be a mangle roller, a device used to squeeze water out of wet laundry.

A spokesman for the North Norfolk District Council said: "Unexploded ordnance, including bombs, mines, and shells from WWII or military training, are frequently exposed on beaches, particularly after storms or high tides.

"If you encounter a suspicious object, do not touch or move it. Immediately call 999 and ask for the Coastguard to ensure safe, professional disposal."

The Norfolk coast was used for military training and defence during the Second World War, leading to many potentially explosive items remaining on the seabed or in cliffs.
