Several traders in the historic landmark say the designs, which include an arcade running through the site’s centre or a courtyard in the middle, are “essential” for businesses there to thrive.

Others, meanwhile, have criticised Norwich City Council’s scheme fearing it would result in stalls being lost.

'THE TIME HAS COME'

Sophie Daniels, who has owned Raw Gemstone Jewellery for nine years - two of which have been on the market - says the market currently "isn't fit for purpose".

She said: "The retail part of the market is struggling and it's declining with people under more economic pressure than ever before.

"The time has come for the market to bring in a new demographic of people which - despite having a lot of great customers now - isn't happening at the moment.

"We only need to look at the high street and there are a lot of empty shops.

"The market could be so much better than it is.

"These proposed plans are off the back of multiple extensive consultations we've had with the council.

"It's not fit for purpose right now.
