Renovation of historic structure to grind to a halt next month

The revamp of the neglected bandstand at Chapelfield Gardens will be put on hold in May for the duration of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival.

Builders from King and Company began transforming the 126-year-old structure two months ago after announcing the plans in September.

A spokesman for Norwich City Council said: “The bandstand restoration, funded by Historic England, is going well and is due to be completed in early summer.

"Work to the bandstand will be suspended for the duration of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival.

"The site will be safely secured and work will restart once the festival has closed.

"As with any conservation project, they take time to ensure careful and considered restoration."

The contractors have removed the top of the bandstand for repair and are due to reinstate it shortly.

The renovation also includes replacing the timber structure and upgrading the steps.

Norwich City Council is also working with the event organisers for the Norwich Comedy Garden, a festival taking place in July, to ensure it runs smoothly.
