Firebrand Norfolk MP insists he won't be joining Labour rebels in new socialist party

Clive Lewis, MP for Norwich South, said he had not been approached to be part of the new group, led by former Labour leader Mr Corbyn and ex-Labour MP Zarah Sultana.

In an announcement on Thursday night, Ms Sultana said the new socialist party would be formed with other independent MPs and activists, aiming to challenge a "broken" Westminster system.

Mr Lewis has recently rebelled against the government in three major votes in as many weeks, on housebuilding and welfare reforms as well as proscribing group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

But despite speculation he may join the new group, a spokesman for the MP said he had not considered this an option. Clive Lewis MP and Jeremy Corbyn MP visiting NTS (Norfolk Training Services) in 2016 (Image: Antony Kelly) Mr Lewis was an early supporter of Mr Corbyn's leadership and was a member of his shadow cabinet before quitting in 2017 as he refused party orders to back the Brexit bill.

Mr Corbyn, who led Labour from 2015 to April 2020, stepped down after the party's loss at the 2019 general election.

He was suspended from Labour in 2020 after he refused to fully accept the Equality and Human Rights Commission's findings that the party broke equality........
