Mystery remains over ownership of deadly Norfolk shipwreck once sold for £25

Raymond Mills, 74, died after getting caught out by the tide while walking out with his granddaughter to explore the SS Vina, which grounded at Brancaster in 1944.

At an inquest into his death, at Norfolk Coroner's Court earlier this year, his family called for additional safety measures to be made at the National Trust-owned beach.

They had campaigned for improved signage or for the wreck to be removed entirely.

Samantha Goward, Norfolk's senior coroner, agreed that action needed to be taken to avoid a repeat of the tragedy.

However, it has now emerged that her efforts have been thwarted as the trail over who is responsible for the wreck has run cold.

She outlined her concerns in a prevention of future deaths report - documents used by coroners to highlight dangers - which she issued in response to her frustrations.

But things have been unable to progress following a response from the Department for Transport, whom the report was initially sent to.
