‘No black and white answer’ - GP defends paramedic after criticism over choking death
A partner from Beccles Medical Centre claimed the decision made by the medic was not incorrect but instead highlighted a “a grey area” in how to deal with such cases.
The response was prompted following the inquest of Kathleen Gregory, after which coroner Darren Stewart issued a report to prevent future deaths to the medical practice.
During the earlier hearing, the court was told the 74-year-old had died of asphyxia at Beccles Care Home, based in the town on St George's Road, on November 29, 2023, when food became lodged in her throat.
She was discovered collapsed at around 1.30pm and appeared to be choking. Staff sat her upright and searched her airway but found no visible obstruction.
A paramedic from Beccles Medical Centre was already on site for an unrelated matter and attended to her immediately.
He found Mrs Gregory had no pulse........
