The section of road, near a major branch of Sainsbury's, can only be used by buses and other authorised vehicles, such as taxis, between 07.30 and 09.30am during the Monday-Friday week.
It has been a bus gate since 1993, when the decision was made to create one to help buses travel more easily through the city.
A Freedom of Information request has revealed that between January 1 2024 and May 16 of this year - when the FOI was submitted - the council issued 5,777 charges to motorists who had driven through the restricted section.
