During the Second World War, Vida Haylett, who has died at the age of 101, was often seen whisking passengers to weddings, funerals and other social events.

Indeed, one morning, she rescued a man from rubble after a bomb had fallen and took him to hospital in her taxi.

After leaving her job as a cabbie, Vida continued to drive her own car - a unique Daimler automobile - and she could be seen motoring around the town well into her 90s.

She only took her foot off the accelerator for the last time at the age of 96 - and even then it was not by choice. Her car had failed its MOT.

Vida was born on George Street in Great Yarmouth in 1923 to Sidney and Maude Crane before the family moved to the Rows where she grew up with two brothers and a little sister.

Her parents worked hard to support the three children, instilling a work ethic in their eldest daughter which she never lost.
